Will of

In the name of God Amen
I Thomas Cogger
of the parish of Wimbledon in the county of Surry Blacksmith do make
this my last will and testament in manner and form following that is to
say first and principally I commend my soul to Almighty God hoping for a
joyful resurrection at the last Day and my body to the earth to be
decently buried at the discretion of my executor hereafter named I give
and bequeath to my nephew Thomas
Cogger for the great love and affection I bear to him he having
been under my care from his infancy all that my leasehold estate
house shop and premises lying and being in Merton in the parish
of Wimbledon aforesaid with all my household furniture stock and
implements of trade with everything thereunto belonging with my moneys
Book Debts Bonds and other Debts let them be of what kind or nature
soever chargeable nevertheless with the payment of all my just debts
legacies funeral expenses and probate of this my will I
give and bequeath to my brother Ephraim
Cogger the sum of thirty pounds to be paid to him in twelve
months after my decease. I
give and bequeath to my sister Mary
Downe wife of Robert
Downe the sum of twenty pounds to be paid to her in twelve months
after my decease and in case of her death before the same becomes due
then I give and bequeath the same to such child or children of her the
said Mary Downe as shall be living at her decease to be equally divided
between them share and share alike and if there shall be but one child
then to order and direct that the aforesaid twenty pounds be given as
aforesaid to such child I give and bequeath to my nephew John
Cogger of Brixton Causeway in the parish of Lambeth Blacksmith
the sum of thirty pounds of good and lawful money of Great Britain to be
paid to him in twelve months after my decease and in case of his death
before it becomes his property and he should leave a widow then I do
order that the same be put out to interest and such widow to receive the
benefit of it for her life and at her decease that it be equally divided
amongst such children or their heirs as shall be living at his death
except Thomas Cogger who now lives with me or his family which shall be
excluded from all interest in the same I give and bequeath to my nephew Ephraim
Cogger of Seal in the County of Kent all such money as is now due
and owing to me or shall be due and owing to me at the time of my
decease also I give and bequeath to my said nephew Ephraim the sum of
five guineas to be paid to him in twelve months after my decease all
which said debts and legacies I charge all my personal estate with the
payment thereof I give and bequeath to my said nephew Thomas Cogger who
liveth with me all that my real estate consisting of two freehold
messuages or cottages with the land and appurtenances thereunto
belonging situate lying and being in the parish of Wrootham in the
county of Kent let the same be freehold gavelkind or copyhold or of what
xx so ever with all its Rights and Mxxx thereunto belonging he paying
all Rents and Sowing due to the Lord by custom of the Manor to him his
heirs and Assigns for ever all the Rest and Residue and Remainder of all
my Real and Personal estate and effects whatsoever or of what nature and
kind so ever I give and bequeath to my said nephew Thomas Cogger to his
sole use and behoof appointing him sole executor of this my last will
and testament hereby revoking and making void all will or wills by me
heretofor made in witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal
this nineteenth day of September in the year of our Lord one thousand
seven hundred and seventy five. Proved
* Although the will
refers to Thos as nephew it is more likely that the Thos concerned was a
great nephew.
