both signed, both of this parish – marriage by licence – one of the witnesses was John Whitworth
Marriage Allegation and Bond obtained from Cheshire Record Office states that “the thirtieth day of September in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and eighty three on which day appeared personally James Whitworth of Stayley Bridge in the parish of Ashton-under-Line in the County of Lancaster, Diocese of Chester, Clockmaker, and being sworn on the HOLY EVANGELISTS alledged and made oath as follows, That he is of the age of 21 and upwards and a batchelor and intends to marry Lydia Booth of Mozeley in the Parish of Ashton-under-Line in the County of Lancaster, Diocese of Chester aged eighteen years and upwards and a Spinster with the consent of Thomas Booth her father”. Witnesses were John Whitworth and James Wagstaff. parish of Ashton-under-Line in the County of Lancaster, Diocese of Chester,
Clockmaker, and William Shaw of the said parish in the County and Diocese
aforesaid being sworn on the HOLY EVANGELISTS alledged and made oath as
follows, That he is of the age of 21 and upwards and a widow (sic) and intends
to marry Sarah Wardle of the parish of the Parish of Ashton-under-Line aged
twentyone years and upwards and a Widow”. Witness was William Shaw. Both
signed and the signature of James Whitworth is different from that of the
James Whitworth who married Lydia Booth.

James Whitworth’s will dated 1790 (transcript of the original at Lancashire Record Office) confirms many of the above family links including the second marriage to Sarah Wardle.
Sarah Whitworth died in 1808. Her will (Lancashire Record Office) leaves everything to John Gartside of Hollingworth innkeeper, her son-in-law
