1809 11 July Martha wife of Thomas Guillaume of Botley buried at Southampton St Marys

1818 23 May burial Thomas Guillaume of Botley age 75 Southampton St Marys

This reinforces the view that Thomas the merchant of Botley originated in Southampton - he returned there to marry Martha having set up his business in Limehouse.  Thomas is shown as “of Redriffe (Rotherhithe)” at his marriage in Southampton .

The information found at Limehouse suggests that Thomas and Martha lived there during the early years of their marriage

1787 Trade Directory Thomas Guillaume and Co Limehouse Bridge Shipbuilder

1788 9 May Extract from Indenture “… several messuages, warehouses, workshops, wharfs … lying and being on the S. and SE sides of the New Cut or Canal at LImehouse in the parish of St Ann Mdsex being bounded W and NW by the said canal and by the street called Church Row on the E and by a way or passage leading from the street or place called Risby Ropewalk to Church Row aforesaid which were conveyed to the said Charles Rich in several parcels or lots of ground as the said premises are in the several tenures of occupations of the said Charles Rich and of his lessees Messrs Guillaume and Co.

From A2A site:

THE PROPERTY RECORDS OF THE EAST INDIA COMPANY AND THE INDIA OFFICE - ref. IOR/L/L/2
 RATCLIFF NAVAL STORE WAREHOUSE
hit[from Scope and ContentThe Naval Store warehouse at Stone Stairs Ratcliff stood on copyhold ground owned by the Manor of Stepney. Before 1794 the warehouse was leased by the East India Company from Guillaume and Company, who in turn leased the premises from the Freeman family. The warehouse was destroyed in July 1794 by the fire which spread through Ratcliff. In October 1794 Thomas Guillaume assigned his lease to the Company for £150 on condition that £1,500 was spent on rebuilding the warehouse. In November 1795 the Company purchased the copyhold of these premises with some additional property from Susannah Freeman for £5,000.

There is further corroboration of this in a letter held by John Guillaume.  It was written by Thomas Guillaume’s granddaughter Harriet, wife of Richard Baker, vicar of Botley. “I have an engraving of the ship that my grandfather Guillaume went abroad in.  He lived at Limehouse in London and I think buried a daughter in Bermondsey churchyard.  At last he sold or gave up what he had and came to live in Botley where he invested his money and his 2 sons because acquainted with Miss St Barbe and Miss Houghton.”

Finally a collection of documents concerning a house in Southampton (held at the Southampton Record Office) include the following relationships:

The marriage settlement dated 1727 confers a property given by Mary Rice’s parents, Robert Rice and Mary Rice to Peter Guillaume mariner when he marries Mary

Later documents (1760s) refer to Thomas Guillaume, formerly of Southampton and later of Rotherhithe – the only surviving son of Peter Guillaume mariner and his wife Mary, formerly Rice.

A final document in the same set dated 1790 refers to Thomas Guillaume and his wife Martha.

The following group is the family of Thomas Guillaume (jnr) son of Thomas and Martha with more evidence of the Limehouse/Rotherhithe link   He married Elizabeth Adderley in London then moved to Northam where he had the shipyard.  Later retired to Brighton .

1801 Thomas Guillaume born 23 January 1801, baptised 27 Feb 1801 St Mary Magdelen Bermondsey, father Thomas mother Elizabeth  “Thomas son of Thomas and Elizabeth Guillaume, Shipbuilder, Jamaica Row”

1804 30 Nov Eliza Adderley daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Guillaume admitted/baptised Southampton St Michaels (privately baptised at Rotherhithe)
